Kawakawa

Kawakawa

Kawakawa is a small, evergreen shrub native to New Zealand, known for its aromatic, heart-shaped leaves. It typically grows to about 2-3 meters in height and forms a bushy habit. This plant thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil and prefers shaded or semi-shaded areas, making it suitable for woodland or forest garden settings. Kawakawa can tolerate a range of soil types but does best in moist conditions. Its relatively low-maintenance once established and is known for its medicinal properties, especially the leaves, which are used in traditional Maori remedies. While its quite hardy, it prefers regular watering, especially in dry periods. Kawakawa is well-suited to temperate climates and can be used to attract native wildlife, including birds and insects.
